Take a Ride Today .. Find Who Invented the Classic Chevrolet and Other Chevy Beginning History

We Americans love our cars and trucks. We drive everywhere, to work, on trips, to the beach, shopping and so on. Companies like Chevrolet, Ford and Dodge have provided us with automobiles and employed millions of American workers over most of the 20th century.

They have provided transportation that has opened up this country from coast to coast. I can't think of anyone who would like to go back to the horse and buggy. Consider the Chevrolet history beginning in 1911. It is a rich and interesting story.

William Durant founded the Chevrolet Motor company in 1911 after being forced out of General Motors in 1910. He had also founded that company. Mr Durant founded the Chevrolet Motor Company  in partnership with famous race car driver Louis Chevrolet.

The first car manufactured by the new company was the Classic Six selling for $2,150.00 in 1911. This was a large, impressive car for the wealthy. In 1911 it was too expensive for the common man. William Durant and Louis Chevrolet ended their partnership with Durant buying Chevrolet out  in 1915.

This was a bad move on Chevrolet's part because if he had held on to his shares a few years he would have been rich instead of dying penniless.

Louis Chevrolet only wanted to make impressive cars for the wealthy, and Durant wanted to enlarge the company to produce cars for the common man. The less expensive cars made Durant enough money to buy a major share in General Motors in 1916 and become president of the company by 1917.

In 1918 General Motors bought Chevrolet Motor company and made it a separate division of it's company. From this point on General Motors and Chevrolet were up and moving with a reputation for top engineers who were responsible for a steady stream of inventions and innovations in the car industry to this day.

In 1918 the first Chevy truck was sold and in 1925 the Chevrolet Superior came out at $650.00.

Chevrolet was the third most popular car in America in 1920. The 1st 6 cylinder engine came in 1929, the 1st station wagon in 1939, a convertible coup in 1940 and the famous Corvette in 1953. The list goes on and on as you will see in some of the other classics listed below ...
