The Invention
Louis Chevrolet, who invented the car, would be amazed at how these automobiles have progressed through the years. The 1914 model is just one of the many series to come reeling through the years.
As you begin to stray beyond the background information of this antique automobile, you begin to realize that there’s more history to this old United States symbol than you may have first thought.
In 1914, Chevrolet offered five new models in their lineup. These cars, which included the Royal Mail Roadster and the Baby Grand, were called the Chevrolet Series H.
Series H Specifications
The Series H developed a 24 horsepower overhead-valve 171-cubic-inch four cylinder engine with splash lubrication. The transmission was mounted to the rear of a cone clutch and ahead of a torque tube that ran to the rear axle. The suspension on the Series H was semi-elliptic front and three-quarter elliptic rear springs.
Royal Mail Roadster – The “Most Wanted” 1914 Chevrolet Model
Modestly priced at $750 and the most popular Series H model was the H-2 ” Royal Mail” Turtleneck Roadster. The Roadster, which had a 104-inch wheelbase, was an open car with a folding windshield and folding top. Included on the Roadster was a hand-cranked engine, a magneto and external gas tank. For additional cost, lights and an Auto-Lite electric starter could be added.
1914 Baby Grand Touring Car
The four-door, five-passenger Series H-4 Baby Grand Touring, with a four-cylinder valve-in-head engine and 104-inch wheelbase, was priced at only $875.
Equipment on the Classic Baby Grand included a Prest-O-LIte tank, speedometer, windshield, Mohair tailored top, cover and side curtains, electric horn and complete tool equipment.

There were approximately 4,515 1914 Series H models built. They were sold from $750-$875 new. You’d be amazed at the price these old Chevy cars are selling for nowadays!
