The Rip Roaring 1920 Chevrolet Story

1920 Classic Chevrolet Purrs into Beginning History

Chevrolet had depended mainly on the Series 490 during William Durant's ownership ( who actually helped invent it) and in 1920, Chevrolet continued with the Series 490 and Series FB. Very little change was made on the Series FB, but one change Chevrolet made on the Series 490 was the reverse-curve front fenders with headlights sitting directly on them instead of the straight type front fenders.

1920 Chevrolet Series 490

There were approximately 150,226 Chevrolet Series 490's built in 1920. The price range on the new vehicles was $795-$1,285.

The 1920 Chevrolet Series 490, with its 102-inch wheelbase, included a four-door, five-passenger Touring with a rear-seat footrest and carpeted interior. Other models available in the Series 490 were...

  • a two-door/two-passenger Roadster
  • a two-door/five-passenger Sedan
  • a two-door/two-passenger Coupe
  • a 490 Light Delivery
  • a 490 Chassis

1920 Chevy Series FB

To finish out these classic automobiles who became a symbol of the roaring '20s don't forget to look at the Chevy FB. This antique auto in its heyday came in four different models (listed below).

The 1920 model Series FB had 125-inch wheelbase. Included in this series were:

  • a two-door/two-passenger FB20 Royal Mail Roadster
  • a two-door/four-passenger FB30 Coupe
  • a four-door/five-passenger FB40 Sedan
  • a four-door/five-passenger FB50 Baby Grand Touring
  • a One-Ton Model T Truck

Some Final Auto Trivia for the Classic Chevy Buff

*In 1920, William C. Durant, founder of General Motors and second half of the inventors of the Chevrolet car, left the company and a few months later incorporated Durant Motors.

*Gaston Chevrolet was killed in a racing accident, but before his tragic death, he won the 1920 Indianapolis 500 driving a car built by his brother, Louis Chevrolet. This was a big moment for the manufacturer since the last time an American-built car had won a race in Indianapolis was 1912.

*Three brothers who owned Short Brothers Motor Company signed a contract with Chevrolet Motors in January 1920 to sell their vehicles. The brothers sold 24 new Chevrys that year with their first one being sold in Western Kentucky to a minister.
