1922 Chevrolet Four-Ninety
There were approximately 243,479 Chevrolet Series 490s built in 1922 with each offering the new owner an optional radio. This Series far outsold the 1920 and 1921 Series 490.
In 1922, Chevrolet's drastic price cuts helped their sales to triple and returned them to second place.
The new price range of the 1922 Series 490 was $510-$875.
Available to the consumer in 1922 in the Series 490 were the:
Feel the Power of Four Cylinders in the 1922 Chevy Classic
Both the Touring and Roadster had a four-cylinder, valve-in-head type motor with cast en-block cylinders, splash oiling system with gear pump and individual oil pockets.
Also included on the Chevrolet 490 Touring and Roadster were a new improved Remy ignition, Zenith improved double jet carburetor, cone-type clutch, selective type transmission with three speeds forward and reverse.
The service brakes were an external contracting type and the emergency brakes were an internal expanding type. The 490 Touring and Roadster also featured a drop-forged I-beam front axle and a three-quarter floating rear axle with Hyatt roller bearings.
The artillery, wood type wheels had demountable rims and large hub flanges. The non-skid front and rear tires were 30 " x 3 1/2". Both the 1922 Four-Ninety Touring and Roadster had a wheelbase of 102 inches.
Some equipment included on the 1922 Chevrolets were a tilted windshield, electric horn, complete lamp equipment, electric lights and starter, and complete tool equipment that included pump and jack. Also included were top, top cover, side curtains and pockets in each door.
1922 Chevrolet Four-Ninety Sedan
The five-passenger Chevrolet Four-Ninety Sedan was priced at $1185. This all-season car, which offered permanent overhead protection, could be used as either an open or closed car. The solid post construction built body on the 102-inch wheelbase offered the consumer divided front seats.
Other specifications on the four-ninety Sedan included 31" x 4" plain front tires and rear non-skid tires, rear 12-gallon gasoline tank, 15-inch steering wheel, Zenith improved double-jet carburetor, quarter-elliptic front and rear springs and cone type clutch.
Equipment available on the four-ninety Sedan included complete lamp equipment with headlight dimmers, complete tool equipment with pump and jack, electric horn, electric lights and starter plus much more.
Chevrolet Four-Ninety Coupe of 1922
With a 102-inch wheelbase, the two-passenger 1922 Chevy Four-NInety Coupe also had a body of solid post construction. Some specifications on the Coupe included a 10-gallon gasoline tank, splash oiling system with individual oil pockets and gear pump, spur and gear steering with 15-inch steering wheel, plain 31" x 4" front tires and non-skid 31" x 4" rear tires.
No Stopping Chevrolet in the Year of 1922
Chevrolet knew that the long-lived Series 490 was about to come to an end when customers began to realize that the 490 just couldn't live up to the Model T-Ford.
But this didn't stop Chevrolet and they kept on going with a whole new idea for 1923.
